The Portal Opens April 7. Here's Who's Staying, Who's Going, and Who's Gone.
The transfer portal window: April 7-21. Jaland Lowe (8.0 PPG, 9 games) is the first Kentucky player to announce his departure.
On3 / Kentucky Kernel
Definitely Gone (Out of Eligibility)
Otega Oweh (18.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 2.7 APG) โ Kentucky's leading scorer is out of eligibility. Career over. He'll pursue the NBA draft but isn't projected as a pick on most boards.
Denzel Aberdeen (13.5 PPG, 3.4 APG) โ The Florida transfer who became Kentucky's second-leading scorer and emergency point guard. Out of eligibility.
These two accounted for 32.1 combined points per game โ 40% of Kentucky's scoring. Replacing their production is Pope's most urgent task.
In the Portal
Jaland Lowe (8.0 PPG in 9 games) โ Shoulder injury wrecked his Kentucky career before it started. Two years of eligibility left. Good player who never got a fair shot with this program.
Likely Leaving (Strong Signals)
Jasper Johnson (4.9 PPG, 35 GP) โ Five-star freshman guard who was forced into backup point guard minutes after Lowe's injury. Reports indicate his family is unhappy with his role and playing time. Multiple outlets give him only a 40% chance of returning.
Collin Chandler (9.7 PPG, 41% from three) โ This one hurts. Chandler followed Pope from BYU and shot the ball at an elite level as a sophomore. But BYU is reportedly making a major NIL push to bring him home. The combination of family ties, faith community, and money could be enough to pull him back to Provo.
Mouhamed Dioubate (8.8 PPG, 5.5 RPG) โ A productive junior forward, but with limited upside at the next level. Could seek a bigger role elsewhere.
Expected to Stay
Malachi Moreno (7.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.8 APG) โ The 7-0 freshman center is creeping up NBA draft boards but would benefit from another year of development. If he stays, he's the centerpiece of Year 3.
Brandon Garrison (4.7 PPG, 4.1 RPG) โ Confirmed returning. Steady junior big who provides depth and toughness.
Andrija Jelavic (5.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG) โ The 6-11 Croatian freshman showed flashes. Has two years of eligibility remaining as a classified sophomore.
Kam Williams (6.0 PPG, 6-8 wing) โ Some mock drafts have him lottery-bound, but he played 24 games. A return would be massive for the roster.
The Math
If the worst-case scenario plays out โ Johnson, Chandler, Dioubate, and Trent Noah all leave alongside Lowe and the two seniors โ Kentucky loses 11 players from this roster and enters April with Moreno, Garrison, Jelavic, and Williams as the only returning contributors. Pope would need to rebuild virtually the entire roster through the portal and one high school recruit (Mason Williams).
That's not unprecedented at Kentucky โ Calipari did it annually with one-and-done rosters. But Calipari had five-star classes waiting. Pope currently has one four-star commit. The portal isn't just important. It's everything.
