Gillispie's two-year stint (2007–2009) was the briefest head coaching tenure in modern Kentucky history. Hired after a successful run at Texas A&M, he compiled a 40-27 record that fell short of Kentucky's championship expectations. His first season produced an 18-13 record and NIT appearance — a rarity for the Wildcats. The tenure's brightest moment came when guard Jodie Meeks scored a program-record 54 points against Tennessee in January 2009. Gillispie was dismissed after his second season.
