Sutton arrived at Kentucky in 1985 as a proven winner from Arkansas and guided the Wildcats to an Elite Eight in his first season. His four-year tenure (1985–1989) produced an 88-39 record, but was overshadowed by an NCAA investigation triggered when a package sent to recruit Chris Mills was found to contain cash. The resulting probation — including scholarship reductions and a postseason ban — cast a long shadow. Sutton resigned under pressure in 1989, but his teams featured talented players like Rex Chapman and Ed Davender. Despite the difficult ending, he went on to a distinguished career at Oklahoma State and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
