Claytor was a starter on the 1978 championship team who won the Outstanding Defensive Player Award and scored 17 first-half points in the Elite Eight game against Michigan State to help send Kentucky to the Final Four. Cut from his seventh-grade basketball team in Toledo, Ohio, he was discovered by UK coaches who were originally scouting another player — and ended up scoring 822 career points while co-captaining the 1978-79 squad alongside Dwane Casey.
