Mercer stepped up brilliantly after Derek Anderson's injury to lead the 1996-97 Wildcats to the NCAA championship game, earning Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors despite the title game loss. A 1996 national champion who averaged 18.1 points per game, he was selected sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1997 NBA Draft.
