A two-time Helms All-American (1929, 1931) and the first multi-year All-American in Kentucky basketball history, Spicer earned honors under two different head coaches. He captained Adolph Rupp's very first team in 1930-31 and was its leading scorer, helping lay the foundation for what would become a college basketball dynasty.
