Donnie Freeman Is in New York. The Portal Is Closed. Now What?
Rick Pitino opened his checkbook and Donnie Freeman flew east โ and with the transfer portal closing today, Mark Pope's Plan A for the frontcourt is officially gone. Freeman averaged 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds at Syracuse, was the consensus best available big in the portal, and was predicted to be a Wildcat as recently as yesterday morning. He chose St. John's because St. John's paid more. That's not a recruiting failure โ that's an NIL auction Kentucky lost at the final bell. The silver lining: the portal only closes for new entries, not commitments โ Pope can still land players already in the pool. But the obvious guy is gone, the frontcourt hole that's been vacant since Garrison left is still open, and Pope is now playing with second-tier options. He's never missed a closing bell. But the bell just rang, and he's behind.
