The first Black scholarship basketball player in University of Kentucky history, Payne broke the color barrier in 1970-71, averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds as the team's starting center while earning All-SEC honors. His courage in integrating Kentucky basketball was a watershed moment for the program and the broader SEC, and he was selected second overall in the 1971 NBA Supplemental Draft.
