A three-time consensus All-American and member of the 'Fabulous Five,' Beard led Kentucky to back-to-back NCAA championships in 1948 and 1949 plus a 1948 Olympic gold medal. He was UK's first four-time All-SEC selection and finished with 1,517 career points, playing in the NBA's first All-Star Game in 1951.
