A World War II veteran whose 71st Infantry Division liberated a concentration camp, Barnstable returned from service to become the sixth man on Kentucky's 1948 'Fabulous Five' and a starter on the 1949 back-to-back championship team. He was an alternate on the 1948 Olympic gold medal team and helped Kentucky go 127-13 across four seasons, winning the SEC regular-season and tournament titles all four years. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1950 but chose to coach high school basketball instead.
