The Baron of the Bluegrass built Kentucky basketball into a national dynasty over an extraordinary 41-season career (1930โ1972). His 876-190 record and four national championships (1948, 1949, 1951, 1958) established Kentucky as one of the sport's foundational programs. Rupp's 1948 'Fabulous Five' โ Alex Groza, Ralph Beard, Wah Wah Jones, Cliff Barker, and Kenny Rollins โ won the NCAA title and then represented the United States at the 1948 London Olympics, winning gold. The 1958 'Fiddlin' Five' remains one of college basketball's great underdog stories, winning the championship despite being given little chance. Rupp won 27 SEC titles and coached some of the game's all-time greats, including Frank Ramsey, Cliff Hagan, Cotton Nash, Dan Issel, and Pat Riley. Rupp Arena, the cathedral of college basketball, bears his name. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969.
